Providence Building a World Class Emergency Department

Apr 17, 2014

“It will be one of the best Emergency Departments in the entire region–and our community deserves it.”
– Dr. William Strudwick, Medical Director, Emergency Department

Pride and anticipation was building among physicians and associates in the Providence Emergency Department as preparations were being finalized for the opening of Phase One ED renovations on April 15th – which reveal a completely redesigned space – 22 new private rooms along with a radiology and resuscitation rooms, all created with patient comfort and clinical excellence in mind.

“The new ED will provide patients and their families with privacy, dignity, and state-of-the-art technology which will be second to none,” said Dr. William Strudwick, Director of the ED. “We have always provided excellent care here, but now the facilities will match the high level of clinical services our patients receive.”

The finished ED will offer approximately 40 beds in mostly private rooms, including special rooms for patients with behavioral health conditions who may need to be separated from the general patient population or require additional security. The project will feature a new public entrance, ambulance entrance, expanded nursing stations and waiting room. Associates will also benefit from the innovative design, latest technology, and convenient nursing stations for a more seamless operational flow.

“I couldn’t be more excited,” said Dr. Strudwick. “Everything from the colors to the lighting to the equipment in the rooms has been designed with patients in mind. Providence sees up to 48,000 patients in its Emergency Department each year, so expansion was necessary.”

In addition, patients will benefit from the new ProviCare service, a treatment system for patients who come to the ED with less acute needs. Every patient arriving at the ED is triaged, and those with acute needs will be directed to the acute care area – while those with bumps, scrapes, bruises, sprains or other non-emergent issues will be sent to ProviCare, with associates and physicians ready to treat them.
