Lactation Training Puts Providence at the Forefront

By: Maria Jaramillo

On January 22-23, a two-day training for 15 Maternal Infant Health (MIH) staff members to become certified Breastfeeding Counselors was held at Providence. In total, 15 nurses from MIH, 1 nurse and 1 medical assistant from Center for Life (CFL) and 1 medical assistant from Family Medicine attended the training. These staff members will be available to provide patients with breastfeeding information and assistance.

Training was conducted by Prepared Childbirth Educators, Inc.  (PCE). The instructor is a board certified lactation consultant.  The course covers topics such as: nutritional needs of mother and baby dyad, management of common problems, medication, supporting women and their infants with hospital breastfeeding support and education. At the conclusion of the training, attendants receive continuing education credits and nurses may take a certification exam to receive a Lactation Counselor (LC) credential.

“We are so very happy to be able to host this training” commented Gabriela Garcia, Director of the Center for Perinatal Advocacy. “Providence is on a journey to become a designated, Baby-Friendly hospital, the gold standard of breastfeeding in the United States. Providing training to support our staff is invaluable as we seek this designation. We are especially proud of the commitment of our staff who literally weathered the winter storm to attend. The addition of 18 staff members with lactation training puts Providence as a leader in this field and at the forefront of every hospital in the District”.

Funding for this project was kindly granted by Capital One, and hosted by the Center for Perinatal Advocacy, Maternal Infant Health, and Nursing Education. For more information, please contact: Maria Jaramillo, Perinatal Coordinator at maria.jaramillo@provhosp.org or 202-269-7109.
