Local Foundation Applauds Providence Emergency Center, Awards $50,000 to Support Renovation

Mar 27, 2014

A leading area foundation, directed by local business leaders, has awarded $50,000 to support the renovation of Providence's Emergency Department.  "You do such important work for this community," said a representative.  "We're delighted to be able to help."

The current Emergency Center at Providence was constructed in 1956 when the hospital opened at 12th and Varnum St., NE.  Designed to care for 30,000 patients, or up to 82 patients per day, the department now provides care to nearly 50,000 patients from all eight Wards in the District.  Providence's new Emergency Center will include an expansion of 11,000 square feet and accommodate an average capacity of 138 patients per day.

The new layout will include special areas for patients with specific needs.  Each area will have its own exam room, physicians, nurses, and support staff.  “The new Emergency Center will allow us to take even better care of our patients in an environment designed to provide privacy and dignity,” commented Dr. William Strudwick, Director, Providence Emergency Center. “The new layout will be more modern and efficient, and feature the latest technologies in medical care, electronic records and communications,” he stated.
