March of Dimes Awards $25,000 to Providence

By: Maria Jaramillo, Perinatal Coordinator, Center for Perinatal Advocacy

The March of Dimes Foundation, Maryland National Capital Area Chapter, has awarded two grants totaling $25,000 to Providence Hospital. The funding will advance the goal of significantly improving the health and wellbeing of mothers and their infants.

The first award of $10,000 was awarded to the Center for Perinatal Advocacy at Providence. The Center for Perinatal Advocacy is charged with improving birth outcomes and decreasing infant mortality rates in the District by serving as a convener and implementing best practice programs.  Currently, the Center for Perinatal Advocacy coordinates four such programs: car seat instillation, safe sleep, breastfeeding, and enhanced prenatal care. The Center for Perinatal Advocacy also serves as the local program office for the National Capital Strong Start program, coordinating the efforts of 6 providers currently offering enhanced prenatal care services. This $10,000 chapter community grant will assist in the development and implementation of a safe sleep cribs program.

The second award of $15,000 was awarded to Providence’s Center for Life. For more than 30 years, the outpatient clinic at Providence has provided obstetrical and gynecological care to women and children who need it the most. Services and programs give special attention to mothers and their infants who are underserved and vulnerable. The team of board certified obstetrician-gynecologists and certified nurse-midwives serve over 15,000 patients a year, of which 1,500 are new obstetrical patients.

Specifically, this new grant funding will allow patients to participate in Centering Healthcare Institutes’ CenteringDiabetes®, an innovative group care model that allows pregnant diabetic patients to get involved in their own self-care and support one another. The groups, which consists of 8-10 women with similar due dates, meet ten times over the course of their pregnancy. The Center for Life also hosts groups for non-diabetic mothers, teen mothers, and groups that are conducted entirely in Spanish.

“We are very pleased to have been awarded these two grants by the National Capital Area March of Dimes Chapter. Our maternal and infant health programs work to assist women clinically and with psycho-social support programs to improve health and health outcomes for women and their infants. The efforts of these programs and the support by the March of Dimes are invaluable as we continue on our journey” commented Gabriela Garcia, Director of the Center for Perinatal Advocacy.

The Center for Life accepts most major insurances as well as Maryland and DC Medicaid. This program covers prenatal care, hospitalization, labs, diagnostic services, and newborn hospital care. For an appointment, or to join a Centering group, please call: 202-269-7074.
