Providence Hospital To Become DC 's First Tobacco-Free Hospital Campus in 2007
Where There's Smoke..Well, There's No Smoke
Providence Hospital will use the Great American Smokeout on November 16 to begin assisting associates to go smoke-free in January.

"We care about the health of our associates, patients and visitors and welcome the opportunity to provide everyone with an environment free of second-hand smoke," said Julius Spears, Jr., President and CEO of Providence Hospital. "The consensus is that a tobacco-free facility will result in healthier associates, a healthier community and improve Providence's atmosphere. The transition to a tobacco-free campus is in line with other organizations nationwide that are adopting similar policies to improve the quality of life at work."

Administrators at Providence Hospital decided to make the hospital campus tobacco-free after reviewing the Surgeon General's report, The Health Consequences of Involuntary Exposure to Tobacco Smoke, which stated that there is no safe level of second-hand smoke.

To assist associates during the transition to a tobacco-free campus, educational activities and cessation services will be provided on November 16, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., near the main entrance of the hospital. Activities include classes and cessation aids, and the hospital will promote the Buddy system for cessation as well as various products such as lozenges, nicotine patches and gum. The event is free and open to the public.

Providence Hospital is a member of the DC Tobacco Free Families Campaign, a partnership between the American Lung Association, DC City Council and DC Department of Health, which provides Freedom From Smoking® classes for the community. The next six-session class begins January 2, 2007, from 6:00-7:30 p.m. Please call Cindi Rauert at (202) 269-7742 to register.

Founded by the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent DePaul in 1861, Providence Hospital is Washington, DC's longest operating hospital. As an integral part of the Ascension Health System, the nation's largest not-for profit healthcare system, this 408-bed community hospital serves residents throughout the metropolitan Washington region with joy, care and respect with specialties including orthopedics, geriatrics, advanced laparoscopic surgery and internal medicine.
