Providence Hospital 's "5-South" is a twenty-bed orthopedic unit located on the 5 th floor of the main hospital. We treat a range of patients from young adults to geriatrics.
We are devoted to the prevention and care of musculoskeletal disorders, and of any disease or injury to muscles, bones, joints and supporting connective tissue. Understanding the unique pathophysiology, biomechanics and psychosocial response of individuals to illness and disability guides us in providing the care to orthopaedic patients with diverse needs.
Typically, orthopedic disorders can be classified as acute, chronic or disabling. These three states are separate yet interrelated. The person may move from one state to another, with boundaries expanding and contracting as health states change. The goal of health promotion efforts within all three states (acute illness, chronic illness, disability) is to move the person toward the optimal level of wellness. Each specific state has differing priorities and intensities of healthcare needs within the biophysical, psychologic, sociologic and cultural systems.
Using a holistic approach, the patient's plan of care usually begins before admission. This includes instructing patients about their illness, treatments and available health care services. A specialized "Total Joint Pre-Operative Class" is held weekly for patients requiring surgical intervention for total joint hip and knee replacements and provides them with comprehensive information regarding their surgical procedures. The entire plan of care is reviewed with each patient, with a special focus on the post-operative rehabilitation plan.
The program consists of the following:
Patients meet with the surgeon.
Patients receive a comprehensive " Providence Hospital Total Joint Program Patient Education Manual " and other educational literature and watch a video.
Patients meet with Ancillary Services, including peri-operative nurses who review patient expectations while they are in the OR and post-operative care areas; Respiratory Care Services helps patients practice using incentive spirometry devices, and the Case Management team discusses the patient's discharge plan. The Rehabilitative Services specialist recommends individualized activities and exercises in advance with the patient.
Patients discuss available resources and community support.
Leadership is provided by the director of nursing, an assistant nurse manager, and a unit educator, in collaboration with the orthopedic surgery medical staff. Patient care rounds, with the medical director for orthopedics, are done weekly.
Patients may call (202) 269-7584 to enroll in a class or get more information.
