The Critical Care Area at Providence Hospital includes a 12-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and a 16-bed Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU) that are located on the second floor. Patient care in these areas is rendered by a multidisciplinary team of physicians, residents, nurses, nursing technicians, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, case management, pastoral care and clerical staff. The physicians in the ICU are intensivists, physicians who are highly trained and accredited in critical care medicine. Quality patient care is our first priority, and many initiatives that focus on patient safety protocols identified to be "best practices" by national standards are in place at Providence .
The ICU nurses are members of a rapid response team that includes a respiratory therapist and the senior ICU resident. This team assesses patients throughout the hospital, providing early intervention to the patient whose condition is deteriorating. The ICU staff also responds to cardiac and respiratory arrests throughout the hospital.
The critical care area has helped develop standards identified by Ascension Health's "Reducing Harm in ICU" and "Transforming Care at the Bedside" initiatives. The medical care provided on these units exceeds the recommendations of such nationally recognized organizations as the Leap Frog Group and Delmarva's 100,000 Lives and Beyond Collaborative.
