What is Obesity?

  • Obesity is a chronic, life-threatening disease
  • Excessive body fat that often results in serious health problems
  • Independent risk factor or aggravating agent for at least 30 common health conditions

How do we measure obesity?

  • Determined by height and weight
  • Comparison to ideal body weight
  • Waist circumference
  • Body Mass Index (BMI) = kg/m2
    • NORMAL: BMI 18.5 - 24.9
    • OVERWEIGHT: BMI 25 - 29.9
    • OBESE: BMI 30 - 34.9
    • SEVERE OBESE: BMI 35 - 39.9
    • MORBIDLY OBESE: BMI ≥ 40

Risk of Obesity:

  • With BMI > 30
    • 55% increase in mortality
    • 70% increase in coronary artery disease
    • 75% increase in stroke
    • 400% increase in diabetes
  • Morbidly obese males between 25 and 35 have 12x the chance of dying as normal weight men
  • A morbidly obese adult has a 33% chance of living to age 65 as that of a normal weight person

Psycological Implications of obesity:

Physical Implications of obesity:

The problem with exercise:
Lose 1 pound = 3800 calories
Lose 100 pounds = 380,000 calories
Strenuous exercise = 10 calories per minute
30 min. exercise = 300 calories burned

1 candy bar = 200 - 300 calories

Caloric restriction causes weight loss
