Providence Hospital is proud of our volunteers working throughout the hospital. Our volunteers provide valuable assistance in helping to make your stay as pleasant as possible.
All Providence volunteers must:
- be at least 13 years of age
- be in good health
- have an interview
- have a health screening and TB test
- complete a training orientation program
Providence volunteers should be willing to commit to at least two days a week, four hours a day for at least three months. We work with the volunteer to schedule the hours that are most convenient for him/her.
Patient care volunteers work directly with our patients, extending the care of our nurses, doctors and therapists. He or she might sit at the bedside of a patient whose family cannot be here, read a story to the patient, or help as needed.
Administrative volunteers are vital to the successful operation of the hospital. We turn to these volunteers to lend a helping hand with administrative tasks such as typing and filing, stuffing envelopes, answering phones or any other assignments as needed.
TeleCare Volunteers are each assigned a client. The volunteers make daily
telephone calls to the client to provide a break in the monotony of long hours spent alone.
They also provide an opportunity to identify unmet medical or social needs the client may be facing.
TeleCare is a creative way to give your time and talent. Our volunteers enhance the skills they
bring to the program and receive the personal satisfaction of serving in the community.
When you provide directions for a visitor, comfort a patient's family, escort a patient, assist associates or respond to other requests, you make a difference. Volunteering can also make a difference in your life. As a volunteer, you will learn new skills, make new friends, discover new talents and learn new ways to serve. The experience you acquire in the various fields can also help you in your career decision-making.
Providence 's volunteer service program consists of adult volunteers, junior volunteers and greeters. The adult and junior volunteers assist in departments throughout the hospital and are assigned according to their interests and abilities. The six-week junior summer program begins in June and ends in August. Applications and health forms must be completed before starting the program.
Greeters are assigned at the main entrances of the hospital. They present a friendly welcome to patients, family members and visitors and provide assistance to those with specific needs, such as providing information, directions and/or escorting patients to their destination, helping with wheel chair requests, or doing whatever possible to help make visiting Providence a comfortable experience.
For more information about Providence 's Volunteer Program, contact Roxanne Crooks-Phillips, Volunteer Liaison, at (202) 269-7759.
