Chartered by President Abraham Lincoln in 1861, Providence Hospital is the oldest continuously operating hospital in the Nation's Capital. Our strengths in medicine, surgery and diagnostics distinguish us as a major DC metropolitan hospital. And as a community hospital, we also are committed to long-term services and outpatient programs that encourage health maintenance, prevention and education.

The Daughters of Charity founded Providence, and the hospital has consistently maintained a simple, yet intensely challenging mission: To provide healthcare that works, healthcare that is safe and healthcare that leaves no one behind.

Providence is a member of the Ascension Health System, the nation's largest Catholic nonprofit health system, serving patients through a network of hospitals and related health facilities providing acute care services, long-term care, community health services, psychiatric, rehabilitation and residential care.

Providence Hospital operates a variety of facilities including:

Carroll Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Providence's 250-bed, state-of the-art nursing home provides long term care for a 90% Medicaid-dependent resident population.

Center for Life, a reduced-fee maternity care program provides prenatal care to 1,200 Medicaid and uninsured mothers annually and has provided care for over 20,000 mothers and infants in its 25-year history.
